Holiday Schedule GBSS

Since Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve both fall on Wednesdays this year, we will not be holding figure drawing sessions those two weeks.

Lets plan to meet again on the 7th of January. With it being the 3 hour night we will all be aching for a long session to get the new year rolling. If you have any questions please feel free to e-mail us.

Have a safe and Happy Holiday from all of us at the Green Bay Street Studio!

Wednesday before Thanksgiving

Figure Drawing will still be held Wednesday, November 26th. We have a willing model scheduled and Matt and I will be there, so why not have a drawing session. So if you are in town, we will be there no matter what. Hope to see you there.

FIGURE DRAWING NOTICE

This is just a notice to let you know that our back door is currently not working. The lock is jammed shut and the door is inoperable. This will be fixed by Friday, but unfortunately not for figure drawing this week. As a result, we will need to use the door on the West side of the building. It is located on the far end of the building, atop the ramp on the outside of that side. There is a glass door that will be open for entry. It has a spa logo on the window. If you go straight through the door and down the hallway, you will end up at the bathrooms, from there it is a very easy shot to GBSS (just follow the hallway). You can't go wrong. Sorry about the inconvenience, but the property manager has already had someone out to look at it and the parts are ordered. Everything should be tip top by next week. See you tomorrow!

GBSS COSTUME PARTY Nov. 1!!

Hey everybody, dust off your sewing machines and bust out your stage makeup, we're having a COSTUME PARTY!! I'll warn you--it's gonna be effin' rad, so if you're not into stuff like that, or don't like awesome costumes and amazing haunted studios, then you may want to stay home and eat your left over mini snickers. We'll be doing this one sort of installation-style haunted house, and there will be some art and stuff on the walls. Oh, and a barrel of Brown and some wine that we'll need help with (so only 21 and up). See you there, if you can figure out who I am!

Sui Conrad Photogravure Exhibition @ the Pump House

An exhibition by artist Sui Conrad just went up at the Pump House. Its a pretty rad show, including quite a number of photogravures and navigational charts. Its a very clean, straightforward presentation, and I highly recommend seeing it. There is an artist reception tonight (10-17) too, if you're interested.

Figure Drawing Session Aftermath

Our first Figure Drawing session went off without a hitch! Thank you to everyone who came out. Organized in conjunction with the Visual Arts Society, we will hold a two-hour session at the studio every Wednesday night. I wanted to start a post for reactions and feedback from anyone who went or tried to go. Was it easy enough to find? We are working on getting some signage up to make things easier. How were the accomodations? The chairs? The lighting? The model area? Let us know what you thought of everything and what we could do to make it better for you. It was a great time, and such a great feeling finally getting a figure session in our studio! Thanks again to everyone who came, and to Cindy for helping to organizing everything. We look forward to hearing from everyone and seeing you next week.

"Signing Statement" Opens @ the Pump House

Three of the Green bay Street Studio members, Matthew Duckett, Jenn Bushman & Erich Boldt recently opened an exhibition at the Pump House Regional Arts Center. The show features drawings from all three artists--one triptych each--and explores the various modern approaches to drawing. The group decided to exhibit drawings, as the medium is relatively under-exhibited, and is only recently seeing a resurgence of popularity. Matt, Jenn, and Erich hope to bring this appreciation to theLa Crosse area with their latest exhibition. The show also features a wall dedicated to work by the rest of the members of the Green Bay Street Studio.

Show runs September 4th through October 11th. See the Pump House's website for more information. Pump House hours are: T-F 12p-5, Sat. 12p-4.

Community Input Session--WE NEED YOU

Gorman & Company, the City of La Crosse, and other involved parties are holding a community input session for the proposed apartment complex above the new transit center, to be built in the next year. The plan is that this complex will cater to the needs of the rather anemic art community in La Crosse. The live/work spaces would have features necessary for artists, and there would potentially be gallery space and a sculpture garden incorporated intot he design of the building.

WE NEED YOUR INPUT. I am on the City Art Steering Committee, and I have watched this project progress through various stages of design. There is a danger, however, that the effort will be co-opted by outside interests and will turn into a building with only superficial ties to the art world.

The La Crosse art scene needs all the help it can get. It is not often that resources become available for young artists to take advantage of around here, and we need to make sure that this project does not become a misguided effort and misallocated funds. We need to represent ourselves at this meeting, where developers and City officials will be gauging the art scene by those present. Even if this project does not end up servicing the needs of young, un-rich artists, it is an opportunity for all of us to have a say in where this town's art community is going.

from the taping board

Since the subtitle of this blog is 'news and art', I thought I'd get the ball rolling by posting a bit of the latter.

6x6, hardground, aquatint, simultaneous colour, BFK Rives Heavyweight paper

I have spent the past couple of weeks thinking and rethinking how I wish to progress with the ideas generated by the making of this print.  A couple of strong contenders have become more fully formed in my mind's eye and I'm excited to work them out and see where they lead me.  I'm thinking I'll post updates with images and sketches as this project evolves - we'll see.

The past three months have been fueled by the simple need to be in the studio after not having access to proper facilities for so long.  It was fun.  I felt like a kid in a candy store and enjoyed becoming reaccquainted with the art and craft of printmaking and making for the sake of it.  Working in a well equiped studio without deadlines is liberating and now it's time to get down to the serious business of creative play.

Upcoming Inauguration Reception

You are invited to the inaugural reception for the new Green Bay Street Studio! Come help us warm our new space with drinks and conversation and see some of the art that we have been making.

The Green Bay Street Studio is a group of artists from the La Crosse Area, who work in both printmaking and painting. Seeing the distressing trend of graduating art students leaving La Crosse for art opportunities elsewhere, we decided to create a space that will not only serve as a net for these talented, fresh minds and perspectives, but as a way to reach out to the La Crosse community and provide an education and appreciation of both time-tested processes and contemporary art theory. We aim to offer classes and workshops, as well as regular figure drawing sessions. Starting in June, we will be offering full- and part-time public memberships.

We look forward to seeing you and your friends on the 25th, and we hope you share our enthusiasm for the huge potential this holds for the future of the Arts in La Crosse.

Here's a map showing where we are. We are in the Family Resources building halfway between 16th St S and 14th St S. It a Big, blue brick building. Go through the big storage lot on the east side of the building and we are the first door around the back. Follow the signs! Oh, and watch out for West Ave, in case you haven't been around here in a while--it's pretty non-existant. I recommend taking 16th St south to Green Bay St.
